The Elks National Foundation

The Elks National Foundation is the charitable heart of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks. Since its creation in 1928, the Foundation has provided millions of dollars in scholarships, grants, and community programs across the United States. It exists to help Elks lodges serve their local communities in meaningful and lasting ways.

At its core, the Foundation is built on the Elks principles of charity, justice, brotherly love, and fidelity. These values guide every dollar given and every program funded. What begins as a local donation often becomes part of a national effort to improve lives.

How the Foundation Is Funded

The Elks National Foundation is supported primarily through donations from individual Elks members and local lodges. Many lodges set annual giving goals to strengthen their standing and increase access to grant opportunities. Members often contribute through personal pledges, memorial gifts, or special fundraising events.

Because the Foundation is supported internally, it reflects the dedication of its membership. Every contribution, large or small, adds to a permanent endowment fund. That endowment allows the Foundation to generate income year after year, ensuring long-term stability and consistent charitable impact.

Scholarships for Students

One of the most recognized programs of the Elks National Foundation is its scholarship program. Each year, the Foundation awards millions of dollars in college scholarships to high school seniors across the country.

The Most Valuable Student Scholarship is highly competitive and open to students based on academics, leadership, and financial need. Many recipients receive substantial multi-year awards that help cover tuition, books, and other expenses.

The Foundation also offers scholarships specifically for children and grandchildren of Elks members. These programs ease the burden of rising education costs and reward hard work and community involvement.

For many families, these scholarships make the difference between attending college and postponing higher education. The impact extends beyond the student. It often strengthens entire families and communities.

Community Investment Grants

The Foundation provides grants directly to local lodges so they can meet needs in their own towns. These grants allow lodges to respond quickly and effectively to local challenges.

Common uses for grant funds include:

  • Supporting food banks and hunger relief programs
  • Assisting veterans and military families
  • Providing supplies for schools and youth programs
  • Helping families facing emergency hardships

Because lodges understand their communities best, they are given flexibility in how funds are used. That local control increases efficiency and ensures that money addresses real needs rather than distant assumptions.

Veterans Services

Support for veterans is one of the Foundation’s strongest commitments. The Elks have long considered it a duty to honor and assist those who have served the nation.

Through the Foundation, lodges receive funding to host veteran appreciation events, provide emergency assistance, and partner with veterans’ facilities. In many areas, Elks volunteers visit hospitals and care centers, offering both financial and emotional support.

Programs funded by the Foundation may include transitional housing support, food assistance, transportation help, and community reintegration efforts. These services fill important gaps and show veterans that their sacrifices are remembered.

Youth Programs and Prevention

The Elks National Foundation also supports youth-focused initiatives. Programs such as the Hoop Shoot Free Throw Contest encourage sportsmanship and discipline among young people. Drug awareness initiatives promote healthy lifestyles and informed decision making.

These programs are not only activities. They build confidence and provide mentorship. In smaller communities especially, they create positive outlets and strong role models for children and teens.

Because of Foundation funding, these youth programs remain free and accessible. That ensures participation is based on interest, not income level.

Building Strong Lodges

The Foundation does more than fund community programs. It also strengthens the lodges themselves. Lodges that meet giving benchmarks earn recognition and may qualify for additional grant opportunities.

This structure encourages accountability and steady participation. When a lodge is active in supporting the Foundation, it is often active in community service as well. The two reinforce each other.

Strong financial support of the Foundation often reflects a healthy lodge culture. It signals unity, shared purpose, and long-term planning.

Transparency and Stewardship

The Elks National Foundation operates with a strong focus on stewardship. Funds are carefully managed to protect the endowment and maintain consistent grant availability.

The Foundation publishes financial reports and maintains accountability standards that guide distribution and oversight. This transparency builds trust among members and ensures donations are used responsibly.

Because of its stable endowment model, the Foundation can continue funding programs even during economic downturns. That long-term planning protects the communities that depend on its support.

Lasting Impact

The impact of the Elks National Foundation is both national and local. Millions of dollars flow into scholarships and community grants each year. At the same time, the true impact is measured in individual lives.

A student graduates without crushing debt. A veteran receives help during a difficult season. A family gets emergency assistance after a crisis. A child gains confidence through a youth competition.

These outcomes often begin with a single donation made at a local lodge meeting. That simple act becomes part of something much larger.

The Elks National Foundation represents the charitable engine behind the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks. It turns shared values into practical action. Through steady giving and responsible management, it continues to strengthen communities across the country year after year.

Canyon Elks Lodge #2887 was started Apr 2, 2022 in Canyon, Texas by a group of men and women who wanted to make their community a better place for everyone, especially our Veterans and their families, those with Special Needs, and the youth that will soon grow up and become a part of the place where they live and work.

The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks was started by 15 men in 1868. Since then, scattered across the United States, there are more than 750,000 members and a 150+ year history. With a network of nearly 2000 lodges in communities all over the country, Elks are a generous charitable foundation that each year gives millions in scholarships, an inspiration to youth, a friend to veterans, and more.

An important facet of the Elks is the Elks National Foundation. Ernest Mathis is our ENF chair. He heads up all the fundraising for this important program.

There are several grants available to anyone who qualifies through the Elks National Foundation. Included are Beacon, Gratitude Impact, Freedom, and Spotlight Grants. These grants are used by Elks to help relieve the poor, distressed or underprivileged; advance education or science, but not through scholarships; lessen the burdens of government; lessen neighborhood tensions; eliminate prejudice and discrimination; combat juvenile delinquency.

The mission of Canyon Elks Lodge #2887 and the Canyon ENF is to help build a stronger community in Canyon by investing in where we live and work. Our goal is to help youth develop lifelong skills, send them to college, meet the needs of today’s veterans, and support the charitable work of the state Elks association.
